A 22-year-old young man was sentenced this Wednesday to seven years in prison for working as a false doctor during the coronavirus pandemic, between 2020 and 2021, in the Emergency Operations Center (COE) of the Córdoba city of Río Cuarto, which depends of provincial public health.

The court of the First Chamber of Crime of Río Cuarto handed down that sentence to Ignacio Nicolás Martín for the crimes of "materially and criminally responsible author of the crimes of usurpation of title, illegal practice of medicine, continuous qualified fraud, ideological falsification of document repeated public and minor injuries.”

The chamberlains acquitted him of the accusation of “use of a false private document and simple homicide” in the trial that had begun on July 24.

The murder accusation, of which it was dismissed, had its origin from the complaint of relatives of a man who had died after being treated by the false doctor on December 16, 2020, a case in which the experts determined that the death It was due to a heart attack unrelated to the medication that Martín had prescribed.

The accused has been detained since February 4, 2021, after the justice system opened an investigation based on complaints from the provincial Ministry of Health and the Medical Council that warned about the alleged illegal practice of medicine.

During the trial, the young man had admitted that he was not a doctor and that the Health authorities knew it, but that due to the overflow they had with coronavirus cases they had assigned him the task of caring for patients.

Prosecutors Pablo Javega and Rosario Fernández López had requested 9 years in prison, while the plaintiffs asked for 12 years.

In his last words, before the sentencing, the accused declared himself “not guilty” and assured: “I want to reiterate my apology.”

Lawyer Agustín Cattaneo considered the sentence “disproportionate”, understanding that “he was convicted of minor crimes because he was acquitted of the most serious ones”, and anticipated that once the grounds are made known he will file an appeal for cassation.
